What is a Masterlink?

A masterlink is a tool used to connect sling legs-whether wire rope slings, chain slings, or webbing slings-typically for lifting applications. For clarity, refer to the image below:
In the image above, the red-colored circular component at the top, featuring three interconnected rings, is the masterlink. As shown, it connects four wire rope slings, enabling the lifting of loads with hooks on all four sides. It can also be used for loads that cannot be lifted with a single wire rope sling.

TYPES OF MASTERLINKS

Masterlinks are manufactured in various types to meet diverse human needs. The initial design of masterlinks may not have suited all applications, prompting manufacturers to develop specialized versions. Below are the common types:

1. Weldless Masterlink
   This standard oval-shaped masterlink is designed for lifting loads using slings with up to 2 legs.
2. Masterlink Assembly
   Composed of three interlinked rings, this type is used for lifting with 3-4 leg slings.
3. Welded Masterlink
   Similar to the weldless type but flattened (pressed) at the center to accommodate shackles or connecting links (see image).
    

1. Weldless End Link
   Flatter and more elongated in shape, this type is typically used for single-leg sling applications but is more commonly employed to extend chain lengths rather than lifting.
2. Weldless Round Ring
   The earliest masterlink design, thicker in construction, was historically used for lifting with up to 4-leg slings.
